Home / Test yourself / Level A2 / ¿Qué?, ¿cuál? o ¿cuáles?
A test on one of the classic doubts of Spanish questions: when to ask with qué and when with cuál or cuáles. It is designed for A2 learners who already know the question words and want to use them without hesitating.
Use qué to ask for a definition or before a noun: ¿Qué es un chotis?, ¿Qué libro lees? Use cuál or cuáles to choose among options, usually before a verb: ¿Cuál prefieres?
In Spain, before a noun we use qué: ¿Qué libro quieres? “Cuál + noun” is heard in parts of Latin America, but in the Spanish of Spain it sounds wrong.
With ser, qué asks for a definition and cuál for a specific piece of information. ¿Qué es un DNI? asks what it is; ¿Cuál es tu DNI? asks for your number.
