Key points

  • Tan goes before adjectives and adverbs: tan rico, tan bien.
  • Tanto, tanta, tantos and tantas go before nouns and agree with them: tanta gente, tantas tapas.
  • After a verb, tanto does not change: No comas tanto.
  • Comparisons of equality: tan + adjective + como; tanto/a/os/as + noun + como; verb + tanto como.

Frequent doubts

Why tan grande but tanto dinero?

Because grande is an adjective, which takes tan, and dinero is a noun, which takes tanto. Tanto agrees with the noun: tanta gente, tantos amigos.

What is the Mercado de San Miguel?

An iron and glass market from the early 20th century, next to the Plaza Mayor in Madrid, now full of tapas and food stalls.

How do I say I don't like it that much?

No me gusta tanto. And to compare: No me gusta tanto como el jamón.
