Frequent doubts

When does the direct object take a?

When it is a specific person or a named animal: He visto a Luis, Quiero mucho a mi gato.

Why “Necesitan un camarero” without a?

Because it is not a specific person, just any waiter. With a specific one you use it: Buscan al camarero que les atendió.

Do I say “Conozco a Toledo”?

No: places go without a in standard Spanish: Conozco Toledo, Visité Sevilla. Tener meaning possession does not take a either: Tiene tres hijos.
