Reading: 1 min + PDF exercise Published: 24 Apr 2017

The theory

This exercise shows how the present subjunctive is formed: take the yo form of the present indicative, drop the -o and add the endings with the opposite vowel (compr-o → compre, teng-o → tenga). Then you practise with verbs like venir, hablar, escribir or poner.

Frequent doubts

How do I form the present subjunctive?

From the yo form of the present indicative: drop the -o and add -e endings to -ar verbs (compre) and -a endings to -er and -ir verbs (coma, viva, tenga).

Why tenga if tener is irregular?

Because the subjunctive keeps the irregularity of the yo form: tengo → tenga, pongo → ponga, conozco → conozca.

What are the endings?

-ar verbs: -e, -es, -e, -emos, -éis, -en. -er and -ir verbs: -a, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an.
