Hace y hace que (II): momentos en el pasado

Duration: 3:39 Published: 29 Mar 2021

Second part of the lesson on hace. This time Pilar practises how to ask and answer about specific moments in the past, and the time that has passed since then, with hace and hace que.

En este vídeo practicamos cómo preguntar y cómo responder por momentos puntuales en el pasado y el tiempo transcurrido hasta ese pasado.

Key points

  • Hace + time with the indefinido places a finished action in the past: Empecé a estudiar español hace dos años.
  • Hace + time + que + indefinido says the same, with the time first: Hace dos años que empecé a estudiar español.
  • To ask: ¿Cuándo empezaste a estudiar español? ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que llegaste a Madrid?
  • Unlike part I (actions that continue, with the present), here the actions are finished, so the verb goes in the past.

Frequent doubts

What is the difference between estudio español desde hace dos años and empecé hace dos años?

The first action continues now (present + desde hace). The second is finished: it happened at a specific moment two years ago.

Can hace go at the beginning of the sentence?

Yes, followed by que: Hace dos años que llegué a Madrid. At the end, without que: Llegué a Madrid hace dos años.

Does hace change with plural time expressions?

No. Hace is impersonal and always singular: hace un año, hace tres años.
