Hace y desde hace (I)

Duration: 5:06 Published: 21 Feb 2021

¿Desde cuándo estudias español? ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que estudias español? ¿Cuánto tiempo llevas estudiando español? Three ways to ask and answer about actions that began in the past and continue in the present.

In this video we learn how to express actions that began in the past and continue in the present. Learn Spanish with this free Spanish lesson brought to you by Tilde Madrid Spanish school in Madrid

Key points

  • Because the action continues, the verb goes in the present: Vivo en Madrid desde 2015.
  • Desde introduces the starting point: desde enero, desde 2018, desde el viernes.
  • Hace and desde hace introduce the period of time: Hace cinco años que vivo en Madrid. Vivo en Madrid desde hace cinco años.
  • Llevar + time + gerund is a third way: Llevo cinco años viviendo en Madrid.

Frequent doubts

Why vivo en Madrid desde hace cinco años and not he vivido?

Because the action is still true now. Spanish uses the present where English uses the present perfect: I have lived in Madrid for five years.

Desde or desde hace?

Desde + a point in time (desde 2015, desde el lunes); desde hace + a period of time (desde hace cinco años, desde hace una semana).

Can llevar be used without a gerund?

Yes, with adjectives or places: Llevo cinco días enfermo. Llevo dos años en Madrid.
