Aprender, enterarse, darse cuenta… 8 verbos que confunden

Eight verbs related to understanding and perception that often confuse students, especially English speakers, because English can use the same verb (to learn, to find out, to realise) for several of them.

En el siguiente vídeo, ocho verbos cuyo significado confunde a los estudiantes, especialmente a los estudiantes que habláis inglés. Los verbos son: aprender, enterarse, notar, darse cuenta, descubrir, averiguar, saber y conocer. Como veis, todos son verbos relacionados con el entendimiento y la percepción.

Aprender: to learn through study or experience: Aprendí español en Madrid.
Enterarse (de): to find out about news or information: Me enteré de la noticia por la radio.
Notar and darse cuenta (de): to notice and to realise: Noté que estaba triste. Me di cuenta de mi error.
Descubrir and averiguar: to discover something unknown and to find out by investigating: Descubrí un bar estupendo. Averigua a qué hora sale el tren.
Saber and conocer: to know information and to be familiar with people or places; in the indefinido, supe and conocí mean found out and met.

Frequent doubts

How do I say I learnt that he was ill?

Not with aprender: say Me enteré de que estaba enfermo or Supe que estaba enfermo. Aprender is for knowledge and skills.

What is the difference between notar and darse cuenta?

Notar is perceiving something with the senses or by intuition (Noto frío); darse cuenta is understanding something you had not realised (Me di cuenta de que era tarde).

Darse cuenta de que or darse cuenta que?

The standard form is darse cuenta de que: Me di cuenta de que había perdido las llaves.
