Tips for learning Spanish (cuantificadores)

Duration: 5:32 Published: 29 Sep 2017

Penny, from Australia, is a very experienced language learner: besides English, her mother tongue, she speaks four languages. She shares her experience as an adult student and gives some excellent tips for learning Spanish.

Penny, our Australian student, explains some tips to learn Spanish in this free Spanish lesson brought to you by Tilde Madrid Spanish school in Madrid

Key points

  • An adult learner's tips for learning Spanish, based on her experience with several languages.
  • Quantifiers say how much or how many: nada, poco, bastante, mucho, demasiado.
  • Quantifiers agree with nouns (muchos idiomas, poca gente) but not when they go with verbs (estudia mucho).

Frequent doubts

Is it harder to learn Spanish as an adult?

Not necessarily. Adults may pick up sounds more slowly, but they reason faster and can organise their study. Motivation and regular practice matter more than age.

Mucho or muy?

Muy goes before adjectives and adverbs (muy difícil); mucho goes with nouns and verbs (mucho trabajo, estudia mucho).

What is the difference between bastante and demasiado?

Bastante means enough or quite a lot; demasiado means too much, more than necessary: Hay bastante comida. Hay demasiada comida.
