Key points

  • Ser to identify and describe: El Retiro es un parque histórico.
  • Estar to locate: Está en el centro de Madrid.
  • Tener to say what something has: El parque tiene un lago y muchos jardines.
  • Haber (hay) to say what exists: En el Retiro hay un palacio de cristal.
  • The Retiro once belonged to the Spanish kings; today it is a public park.

Frequent doubts

Tiene or hay to describe a place?

Both work. Tener focuses on the place (El parque tiene un lago); hay simply says that something exists there (En el parque hay un lago).

Was the Retiro always a public park?

No. It belonged to the Spanish kings and became a public park in the second half of the 19th century.

Why está en el centro and not es en el centro?

Because it gives the location of a place, and location takes estar in Spanish.
