Key points

  • Ir a + infinitive for plans and intentions: Este verano voy a viajar a México.
  • The present with a time expression for fixed arrangements: Mañana tengo médico. El tren sale a las ocho.
  • The future simple for predictions and promises: Mañana lloverá. Te llamaré.
  • Future endings are the same for all verbs and are added to the infinitive: -é, -ás, -á, -emos, -éis, -án.

Frequent doubts

Voy a viajar or viajaré?

In everyday conversation, ir a + infinitive is much more common for plans. The future simple sounds more distant or formal and is used for predictions and promises.

What are the most common irregular futures?

Tendré (tener), haré (hacer), podré (poder), saldré (salir), vendré (venir), diré (decir) and querré (querer). The endings do not change.

Can the future express probability?

Yes: ¿Qué hora es? – Serán las ocho (It is probably eight o'clock). It is a very common use in Spanish.
