Learn how to use the subjunctive tense in Spanish to give recommendations with this free Spanish lesson brought to you by Tilde Madrid Spanish school in Madrid

Key points

  • Recomendar + que + subjunctive: Le recomiendo que venga a la escuela algunas semanas al año.
  • Other ways to recommend: hay que + infinitive (hay que usar la palabra en un contexto real) and lo mejor es + infinitive (lo mejor es integrarse).
  • Pascale's tips: use new words in real contexts, watch Spanish films in the original version, read the newspaper and join a group of Spanish speakers.
  • Callejear means to stroll around the streets, a perfect plan in Madrid.

Frequent doubts

Why te recomiendo que vengas and not que vienes?

Recommending is a way of influencing someone else, and verbs of influence (recomendar, aconsejar, pedir) take the subjunctive when there is a second subject.

Can I use an infinitive after recomendar?

Yes, with an indirect object pronoun: Te recomiendo venir and Te recomiendo que vengas are both correct.

What is a good way to remember new vocabulary?

According to Pascale, using new words in real situations: listen for them in the street and among friends, and make the effort to use them yourself.
