Comparativos

Duration: 6:31 Published: 13 Feb 2017

Gert, a Dutchman who lived in England before moving to Madrid, compares both countries: timetables, sport, food and working life. A natural way to hear comparatives in action.

Learn the use of comparatives in Spanish with our student Gert, who will explain to us his experience in Madrid. The Spanish Sessions, free Spanish videolessons online.

Key points

  • Superiority: más + adjective or noun + que: En España se cena más tarde que en Inglaterra.
  • Inferiority: menos + adjective or noun + que: menos horas que.
  • Equality: tan + adjective + como, and tanto, tanta, tantos, tantas + noun + como.
  • Irregular forms: mejor, peor, mayor and menor.

Frequent doubts

Do I say “más bueno” or “mejor”?

Mejor: La comida aquí es mejor. Más bueno is only used informally to talk about a person's kindness.

Tan or tanto?

Tan before adjectives and adverbs (tan alto como); tanto before nouns, agreeing with them (tantas horas como).

Why que and not de after más?

Que compares two things (más alto que yo); de goes before numbers (más de cien personas).
