Learn how to talk about your habits and daily routine in this free Spanish lesson brought to you by Tilde Madrid Spanish school in Madrid

Key points

  • Habits are expressed with the present tense: Trabajo de nueve a cinco. Como a las dos.
  • Many routine verbs are reflexive: me levanto, me ducho, me acuesto.
  • Frequency expressions: siempre, normalmente, a menudo, a veces, casi nunca, nunca.
  • To say when: a las ocho, a las tres y media, por la mañana, por la tarde, por la noche.

Frequent doubts

Where does nunca go in the sentence?

Before the verb (Nunca desayuno) or after it, with no in front of the verb: No desayuno nunca. Both mean the same.

Why me levanto and not yo levanto?

Levantarse is reflexive: the action falls on yourself, so it needs the pronoun me. Levantar without me means to lift something: Levanto la caja.

How do I say that I usually do something?

Use normalmente or the verb soler + infinitive: Suelo desayunar en casa (I usually have breakfast at home).
