Key points

  • To give an opinion: creo que, pienso que, me parece que, en mi opinión, para mí.
  • Creo que, pienso que and me parece que take the indicative: Creo que es una buena idea.
  • In the negative they take the subjunctive: No creo que sea una buena idea.
  • Value judgements such as es importante que or es lógico que take the subjunctive: Es importante que estudies.

Frequent doubts

Why creo que es but no creo que sea?

In the affirmative you present your opinion as true, so you use the indicative. In the negative you reject an idea, and Spanish uses the subjunctive.

Does en mi opinión take the subjunctive?

No. En mi opinión and para mí are followed by a normal sentence in the indicative: En mi opinión, Madrid es preciosa.

How can I agree or disagree in Spanish?

Estoy de acuerdo contigo, tienes razón; or No estoy de acuerdo, yo no lo veo así.
