Reading: 1 min + PDF exercise Published: 25 Jan 2019

The theory

The first part of a series on impersonal sentences: two structures for talking without saying who does the action. The third person plural (Dicen que lloverá mañana) and the second person singular as a generalisation (En esta empresa trabajas demasiadas horas), with exercises to transform sentences.

Frequent doubts

Why “Dicen que…” if no one is mentioned?

The third person plural hides the subject because we do not know it or it does not matter: Dicen que va a llover, Están llamando a la puerta.

What does the impersonal tú mean?

It makes a generalisation that includes the speaker and the listener: En Madrid cenas tarde means people in general dine late.

Are there other impersonal structures?

Yes: weather verbs (llueve), hay, hace (hace frío) and se + verb (Se vive bien aquí), which you practise in the next exercises.
