In order to speak about events in Spanish, one must know how to conjugate the verbs. In Spanish, the verbs are grouped in three categories: the verbs that end in -ar (cantar, montar…), the verbs that end in -er (comer, comprender…), and the verbs that end in -ir (cubrir, morir…). In this post, we are going to learn how to conjugate the Spanish regular present tense of the verbs that end in -ar.

The present tense is used to talk about usual actions and routines, about things happening at the moment or in the near future, and to talk about facts. It is the easiest tense to learn in Spanish, and it is very useful because it is the base you will use to learn all the rest of the tenses.

There are regular and irregular verbs in Spanish. However, the base for all of them is the Spanish regular present tense. There may be variations and irregularities depending on the verb, these endings are shared by all of them.

The Spanish regular present tense conjugation is very easy to form: remove the ending of the verb (-ar) to find the root of the verb, and then add the following endings to it:

Examples of regular verbs ending in -ar are: cantar (to sing), saltar (to jump), acampar (to camp), alquilar (to rent), ayudar (to help), bailar (to dance), desayunar (to have breakfast), trabajar (to work)…
